Save to 22 countries committed to safety in the Strait of Hormuz

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – 22 countries have joined the joint declaration to ensure safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz. In the text, published by the Foreign Ministry of Abu Dhabi, we read: “We strongly condemn Iran’s recent attacks against unarmed merchant ships in the Gulf, attacks on civil infrastructure, including oil and gas plants, and the factual closure of the Hormuz Strait by Iranian forces. We express our deep concern for the escalation of the conflict and ask Iran to immediately cease its threats, landmines, attacks with drones and missiles and all other attempts to hinder commercial navigation in the Strait, and to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2817. Freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The right of the sea is inviolable and the effects of Iran’s actions will be felt on people around the world, especially on the most vulnerable.”.

“In accordance with Security Council Resolution 2817, we stress that this interference with international navigation and the disruption of global energy supply chains poses a threat to international peace and security. In this regard, we call for immediate and complete cessation of attacks on civil infrastructure, including oil and gas plants. We express our readiness to contribute to the efforts needed to ensure safe passage through the Strait and welcome the commitment of the States involved in the preparatory planning for this purpose. We also welcome the decision of the International Energy Agency to authorise the coordinated release of strategic oil reserves and we will take further steps to stabilize energy markets, also collaborating with some producing countries to increase its production. We will also strive to support the most affected countries, including through the United Nations and international financial institutions. Maritime safety and freedom of navigation are a benefit for all nations and we invite the international community to respect international law and to support the fundamental principles of international prosperity and security.”.
