FIRENZE (ITALPRESS) – Libera, the 55-year-old tuscan affected by multiple sclerosis, died today at his home following the self-administration of a lethal drug through the device with eye control that had been specially prepared by the Cnr, to allow it to operate the intravenous infusion of the drug for the end of life. It is the fourteenth person in Italy who had access to medically assisted suicide and the second person in Tuscany followed by the Luca Coscioni Association that gives news of his death.
“I hope, with all of myself, that no one should wait two years to be able to exercise a right that already belongs to him – said in a message entrusted to the Coscioni association by the same Libera –. No one should be forced to fight so long for what should be guaranteed.” “My battle was hard, but I want to believe that it was not vain – added Libera -. If you need to open even only one road, to shorten even one wait, then it will make sense. Libera had obtained from Usl Tuscany North West the free way to access the medical help procedure to voluntary death in July 2024. However, not being able to independently take the lethal drug, being completely paralyzed, had submitted an urgent appeal, through its legal college coordinated by the lawyer Filomena Gallo, national secretary of the Luca Coscioni Association, so that his doctor was authorized to administer the drug. At that point the judge of Florence had raised the question of constitutional legitimacy on the article of the penal code that configures the crime of murder of the consentor, 579 of the penal code, because the administration of the drug by the doctor would be in this case of crime.
After consulting, which has ordered international verification of the existence of suitable devices for the self-administration of the drug for assisted suicide, the Cnr on court order has prepared and tested the disposed. “A Libera goes our thanks for fighting not only for himself, but for all people in his condition, helping to open a road that can also be traveled by others.
