ROMA (ITALPRESS) – A strategic initiative through which to start an organic plan of economic, technical and organizational investment aimed at the qualification of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028. It is the project national teams of flag football presented today in Rome, at the Sala Presidenti del Coni, by the Italian Federation of American Football (Fidaf). American football variant, the flag football has never been present at the Olympics.
It is a contactless sport, with “placcages” performed by removing one of the three “bands” – more similar to fabric belts – attached to the life of the ball wearer, one on each side and one behind. Each team comes to the field with five players and the goal is, as in American football, to make a goal in the opposing endzone.
“We are a team and our strategic vision is to be ourselves. We want to be a community that plays and obviously tries to win. Our path was slow, we were born in 2002 and our goal is to demonstrate that there is also flag football”, the words of Leoluca Orlando, president Fidaf.
Present at the press conference also the number one of the Coni Luciano Buonfiglio: “Italian sport is based on very solid values and has the obligation to stand in the front line to keep them. To do so we must give equal dignity to every sport and every discipline. The goal is to demonstrate that they are close to federations. Italian sport is not a miracle, but it is the fruit of the application of a method. Who can’t win is who hasn’t innovation and who hasn’t applied a method. Fidaf has been completely innovated, maintaining a basic solidity, building certainties and training.”.
Fidaf complete with the technical director Claudio Faccini: “The tip of the iceberg is our athletes. Flag football has always been seen as the playful aspect of American football. At the international level there is a great ferment with many European nationals who are investing on the discipline, which is regulated but is not yet structured at the level of preparation and training”, says Faccini, who puts the viewpoint on the World Championships scheduled from 11 to 17 August in Dusseldorf, the first stage of the qualification path to the Los Angeles Games, where the first two Olympic passes will be awarded.
Already qualified the U.S. as host country, the last three coupons – in total six to male and six to female – will be put up in the pre-Olympic tournament in 2028, to which will participate ten teams according to the results of the continental championships played in 2027 (the first two of each of the five tournaments) and excluding the Nationals already qualified for Los Angeles. Italy, champion of Europe to the male, has all the cards in rules to play the Olympic card.
