Tajani to the Foreign Minister “Ruolo Onu decisive on Hormuz, ready to work for the safety of the ships”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani took part today in video connection to the meeting on the situation in Iran and the consequences of the blockade of Hormuz Strait. According to a note from the Farnesina, the video conferencing was coordinated by the United Kingdom after the declaration of 19 March signed by 35 countries, including Italy. In his speech, the minister reiterated the Italian position in favour of an immediate de-escalation and the return to diplomatic dialogue, underlining full coordination with European and international partners and support for every negotiating solution capable of guaranteeing stability in the region.

Tajani highlighted that the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz has direct impacts on the safety of maritime routes, global energy supply and food safety. Recalling the G7 declaration of 27 March, Italy has confirmed its commitment to contribute to international efforts to protect freedom of navigation, respecting international law, and to safeguard the stability of energy markets. The minister also indicated Italy’s willingness to evaluate participation in multilateral initiatives to ensure the safe passage of ships in the Strait, underlining how a clear mandate of the United Nations represents an essential element. Tajani, together with colleagues such as the Dutch Minister and the Deputy Minister of the Emirates, supported the need for a path with the UN to create as soon as possible a “humanitarian corridor” first of all for fertilizers and for all that will serve to avoid a new food crisis first of all in African nations. Ensure the transport of fertilizers and other humanitarian goods through the Strait of Hormuz is vital.

The meeting followed the adoption of the Declaration promoted by the United Kingdom on 19 March and signed by 35 countries including Italy. The Declaration recalls the willingness to participate in coordinated efforts to ensure the safe passage of ships, support freedom of navigation and stabilize energy markets. Among the guests of today, in addition to the signatories of the Declaration, also Turkey, the Philippines, Malaysia, India, Poland and the European Union. A joint document was not envisaged.
