Iran, the Kuwaiti Ambassador condemns Iranian raids

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The state of Kuwait “condemned with the utmost firmness the blatant and unjustified attacks perpetrated by Iran”. This is what the Kuwait ambassador said in Rome, Nasser Sanhat Alqahtani, in an interview with the Italpress agency. The diplomat notes that “with this escalation, Iran is trying to broaden the scope of the conflict that sees it contradicted, on the one hand, the United States and on the other to Israel. The State of Kuwait reserves the right to respond to these attacks in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.”.

The embassy also wishes to emphasize that “the State of Kuwait and the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (CCG) have sought, in the last 47 years, to establish friendly and development relations with the Iranian regime, based on the principles of good neighbour. However, these Gulf initiatives were welcomed by Iran with threats to the security of these countries, the infiltration of terrorist cells within them, the hijacking of civilian aircraft and the financing of militias in Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon to threaten the countries of the region, including the State of Kuwait.”.

The ambassador recalls that the state of Kuwait and the countries of the GCC “declared, both before and during this conflict, not to be part of it and not to allow any country to use its territory, airspace or territorial waters to launch aggression against Iran. From the beginning of the blatant and unjustified Iranian aggression against the state of Kuwait, more than a month ago, the Iranian regime launched over 900 attacks with ballistic and drone missiles against our country, as big as the region of Lazio. These attacks, contrary to what the Iranians said, did not target military sites, but civil and vital infrastructures, such as refineries and oil and gas deposits, as well as power and water power plants that provide electricity and water to the five million inhabitants of Kuwait. The airport, refueling deposits for aircraft and residential buildings were also affected. To date, there are six victims, including a 12-year-old girl. This confirms that Iranian aggression represents a dangerous escalation affecting humanitarian aspects and means of subsistence, as well as a fundamental violation of international humanitarian law.”.

Regarding the attack on the Ali Al Salem air base, where the Italian contingent of Operation Prima Parthica/Inherent Resolve is deployed, which carries out surveillance, reconnaissance and logistic support in the fight against the Islamic State, Alqahtani stressed that “a constant coordination between the competent authorities is underway both in Kuwait and Italy in support of Kuwait’s air defence systems. Italy is a strategic ally of Kuwait and the Ministry of Defense and the Kuwaiti National Guard continuously counter these attacks by effectively intercepting missiles and drones launched by Iran or Iraqi militias supported by Iran. In addition, a significant part of Kuwait’s defence systems consists of state-of-the-art Italian equipment that has demonstrated their effectiveness in countering these attacks and providing protection and security to Kuwaiti citizens, residents and allied forces stationed on its territory.”.

As regards relations between the GCC and the European Union, the ambassador concluded by explaining that “they are strategic relations, since the Gulf countries have defence agreements with some EU countries, including Italy and France. Hence the importance of an active role of the European Union in any initiative aimed at reducing and ending this escalation, since its repercussions are not limited to the Gulf region, but extend to Europe and the whole world. A striking example is the attacks of Iran against the energy centers of the Gulf countries and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which constitute a real blackmail to the whole world. Moreover, its effects threaten global supply chains and, consequently, a serious global economic crisis.”.
