The Pope begins his journey to Africa, Mattarella: “Destiny of the African continent linked to that of Europe and Italy”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “I wish to express my sincere thanks to the message that he wanted to address me when he is preparing for this long apostolic journey that will take you to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea. In Africa, the continent with the youngest population of the world, Christianity has ancient and deep roots, as witnessed by the places of St Augustine, the Father of the Church, from which your itinerary will start”. Thus the president of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message sent to Pope Leo XIV, “The “young partner” is the protagonist of extraordinary changes and forums of great hopes. Its destiny is strongly linked to that of Europe and Italy. We share the responsibility to identify together the answers to all the main challenges of our time, from the repercussions of wars and conflicts to globalization, from sectarian divisions to demographic and migratory pressure, from the use of natural resources to the climate crisis – the head of the state emphasizes –. The mission of Your Holiness in countries eager for reconciliation and hope will allow to express trust and support to those who – in sometimes very difficult contexts, even for the perspectives of interreligious dialogue – are committed to promoting the values of respect and harmonious coexistence, essential foundations for building a horizon of stability for the benefit and protection of all”.

“The strong call to peace, so urgent in such a sad time, as well as the invitation to unity and fraternity, will contribute to the awareness of the indispensable contribution that every individual and every community are called to provide to overcome divisions and safeguard the dignity of man – Mattarella explains. I am sure that no one will remain indifferent to these solemn appeals, aimed above all at the last generations, called to assume responsibility and live the joy of becoming fruitful seed of social and economic progress for their respective countries and communities. With these wishes, I renew, Holiness, the senses of the deepest esteem and personal consideration”.

MELONI AL PAPA “ITALIA CONTINUERÀ A FARE PROPRIA PARTE PER COOPERAZIONE E PACE”

“In my personal name and the Italian Government, I wish to address to Pope Leo XIV the most sincere thanks and wish for the successful outcome of the apostolic journey that will lead him to Africa for the first time and that will lead him to touch four Nations: Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea. May the Ministry of the Holy Father promote the composition of conflicts and the return of peace, internal and between the Nations, in the wake of the path outlined by his Predecessors, and give support and comfort to the Christian communities that will have a way to meet during the journey. Italy will continue to do its part to foster the construction of a new model of cooperation with the African continent and to support peace, development and well-being of peoples.” In a note the President of the Council, Giorgia Meloni.
