In the afternoon of Monday, April 13th, at the Italian Consulate in New York, the conference was held: “Ethics, Innovation, Care: The Italy–USA Dialogue for a More Human-Centered Healthcare System”, part of an institutional mission designed to strengthen the dialogue between Italy and the United States on one of the most complex themes of recent years: how to build sustainable health systems without losing sight of the human dimension of care. The initiative was promoted by two Italian parliamentary groups: “Progetto Italia” and “Sanità e Ripresa” with the aim of starting a structured comparison between different models, but increasingly interconnected.
To open the meeting was the Consul General of Italy in New York, Giuseppe Pastorelli, followed by the institutional greetings, in connection, of the Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci. Already the first interventions immediately emerged the need to rethink health models not only in terms of efficiency, but also of accessibility and quality of the relationship between doctor and patient.
Between institutional interventions and more technical contributions, the conference continued thanks to the participation of representatives of the academic and health world. The most discussed topics were mainly resource management, the impact of digital technologies and the prospects of precision medicine. Another recurring point was that of the so-called “humanization of care”, which mainly means rethinking the paths of assistance putting the person in the center, not only as a patient but as an individual with complex needs, which do not exhaust themselves in the clinical dimension.
Not by chance, among the interventions was included also that of representatives of the ecclesiastical world to emphasize the ethical dimension of the issue. The closing of the work was entrusted to Monsignor Hilary Franco, advisor of the Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations, who recalled the need to maintain a balance between technological progress and social responsibility.
