WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – The talks, mediated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors Yechiel Leiter and Nada Hamadé Mouawad, as well as with US ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa, have begun in Washington. The Lebanese newspaper L’Orient le jour writes this. This is the first meeting between representatives of Lebanon and Israel in 43 years, after the last of 1982. The one that started in Washington is a preparatory meeting for potential direct negotiations.
The road to a diplomatic exit of the current conflict appears very soft, when the ceasefire between Iranians and Americans is likely to collapse after the failure of the first meeting in Islamabad, writes L’Orient le Jour. A ministerial source told the Panamanian daily Asharq Al-Awsat that Lebanon accepted the meeting after receiving reassurance from Washington, that it would prompt Israel to accept a ceasefire in southern Lebanon. The source added that the talks will focus on a single theme – reaching a ceasefire – without which negotiations would not proceed towards a second stage.
