Industrial production up slightly in August, -3.2% on year

ROME (ITALPRESS) – In August 2024, Istat estimates that the seasonally adjusted index of industrial production increased by 0.1 percent compared to July. In the average June-August period, there was a 0.1 percent decline in the level of production compared to the previous three months. This is announced by Istat, noting that the monthly seasonally adjusted index increases on a cyclical basis for consumer goods (+2.8 percent) and energy (+2.3 percent); on the other hand, capital goods (-2.5 percent) and intermediate goods (-2.8 percent) decrease.Adjusted for calendar effects, the overall index in August 2024 decreases in trend terms by 3.2 percent (there were 21 calendar working days compared to 22 in August 2023). Trend declines characterize almost all industries: the decrease is less pronounced for consumer goods (-2.0 percent), more pronounced for intermediate goods (-7.2 percent) and capital goods (-7.3 percent); up only energy (+6.0 percent). The sectors of economic activity that record the largest trend increases are electricity, gas, steam and air supply (+7.9 percent), manufacture of chemicals (+5.2 percent) and other manufacturing (+2.5 percent). The largest declines were in the manufacture of transport equipment (-14.2 percent), manufacture of machinery and equipment (-11.6 percent) and textile, clothing, leather and accessories industries (-10.8 percent).”In August, seasonally adjusted industrial production is essentially stationary both compared to July (+0.1%), as well as in the average of the last three months compared to the previous three months (-0.1%),” is the comment of the Institute of Statistics. “Among the main industry groupings, positive monthly dynamics are noted for consumer goods and energy, while capital goods and intermediate goods decline. In trend terms, the contraction of the calendar-adjusted index continues. The year-on-year decline recorded in August affects almost all major industry groupings except energy.”
