Humanitas, with Smiles in Pink kicks off breast prevention month

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Raising awareness on the issue of prevention and the importance of early detection for breast cancer: this is the goal of the Humanitas “Smiles in Pink” project, which was renewed with the inauguration of a photo exhibition portraying 20 women who have overcome the disease. These very 20 women are the new testimonials of “Smiles in Pink.” The movement that is part of Pink Union of Humanitas Foundation for Research today welcomes 130 women who have faced the oncological journey in hospitals and Humanitas Medical Care centers in Lombardy, Piedmont and Sicily. To kick off breast cancer prevention month, the Auditorium of the Rozzano Convention Center hosted the event “Let’s talk with Sorrisi in Rosa,” in collaboration with Gente, a weekly news magazine. Protagonists of the evening hosted by Umberto Brindani, journalist and editor of Gente, were the founders of Sorrisi in Rosa, Luisa Morniroli, photographer, and Cristina Barberis Negra, writer. “Smiles in Pink is a friendship project. The women who are part of it with us,” Cristina Barberis Negra told Italpress, “are women who have gone through the experience of breast cancer and who are forging a sisterhood with the project. It is a virtuous contagion of storytelling in the name of prevention, of sharing. “With about 60 thousand new diagnoses each year, breast cancer is the most frequent neoplasm at all ages. From the stage of the Humanitas event, however, Corrado Tinterri, director of the Breast Unit at IRCCS Istituto Clinico Humanitas wanted to emphasize a lot of good news: “Today we really heal a lot,” he said, “twice as much as in the 1980s, and the probability of healing if you are followed in a Breast Unit are 20 percent higher than in non-specialized centers.Breast Units are centers in which surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, case managers, nurses and psychologists work together to support every woman with breast cancer.Prevention remains key to increasing the chances of overcoming the disease. “Early diagnosis makes the treatment path less impactful,” said Daniela Bernardi, head of Breast Radiology and Screening at Humanitas. “In addition to breast self-examination, it is important to establish a personalized prevention path that associates, with the breast examination, mammography and/or breast ultrasound according to age, family history but also the characteristics of each woman’s breast, including mammographic density. On the Auditorium stage with the founders of Smiles in Pink were Gerry Scotti, who has been a testimonial for the project for several years, and doctors from the Humanitas Breast Unit. Among the guests were also Nazzarena Franco, CEO DHL Express Italy, some students from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts with whom Humanitas will carry out workshops for cancer patients, and Norman Larocca, marketing, communication and sustainability director Acqua dell’Elba. Acqua dell’Elba in fact, for the third year, has chosen to stand alongside Pink Union of Humanitas Foundation for Research, a project supporting women’s health, with a fundraising campaign. The fragrance Arcipelago Donna will be distributed exclusively on the Humanitas Foundation website ( fondazionehumanitasdonazioni.com/lessenzadellaricerca ).As every year, the calendar of Sorrisi in Rosa initiatives in Lombardy, Piedmont and Sicily includes free consultations and visits in Humanitas Medical Care and hospitals. These are complemented by educational meetings, charity walks and paths through art.
