ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “You all want to thank the institutions and the community for the constant commitment with which you guard and hand over the memory of those who have struggled, suffered, sacrificed their lives to return to the Homeland honor and freedom.” The president of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, said this, meeting at the Quirinale the representatives of the Combatting Associations and of Arma in the anniversary of the 81° Anniversary of Liberation. “The Liberation struggle is one of the founding pages of Republican history. It marks the moral and civil ransom of a people who, in the Resistance, expressed the strength and the ability to affirm the values of freedom, justice, peace, democracy – Mattarella continued. Those values, sculpted in our Constitution, are not only the fruit of a historical season: they are the foundation of our civil coexistence and the presence of Italy in the international context. A condition obtained at high price, which calls us strictly, every day, to the responsibility of defending and renewing it”.
“The firm refusal of all forms of overwhelming and of every totalitarian drift – whether it is the ideological matrix or the alleged religious reference that inspires it – along with the courage shown by women and men in defending the dignity of the person, constitutes a moral heritage of extraordinary value – said the head of the State –. It is from this momentum of consciences, often matured through difficult and painful personal choices, which was born that extraordinary season of civil commitment that made the war of Liberation decisive for the fate of Italy. In the current international context, marked by conflicts, tensions and deep instability, this call becomes even more intense.”.

“In many, too many parts of the world, men, women and children live war contexts, often under the yoke of authoritarian regimes, deprived of fundamental rights, freedom of expression, the possibility of choosing their own destiny. They are scandalous scenarios, in which human dignity is trampled, in which violence of unjustifiable wars indiscriminately affects civilian populations, in which international law is openly violated and disrespectful humanitarian law. The sufferings of these peoples strike deeply and remind us how precious we have conquered. Freedom and peace, in fact, are not a data acquired once and for all – continued the head of the State -. These are goods made fragile by disgrace and which require awareness, commitment. It is a heritage that must be guarded, made to live and transmitted to the young generations. The prevalence of the law imposed by those who consider themselves provisionally stronger is destined, in fact, to sow mourning and destruction, opening to a condition of permanent conflicts, of barbarism in international life. The role of the Associations you represent takes a great value in this context.”.

“Customs of memory, you are witnesses of a story that is not matter for archives but perennially living. Your commitment keeps the link between past and present fruitful and gives young people the opportunity to understand the authentic meaning of expressions such as freedom and peace and the commitment and suffering that have been necessary to obtain them. Educating in memory means forming conscious citizens, capable of renewing the values that inspire our civil coexistence. It means promoting an authentic reflection on the meaning of the rights we enjoy, recognizing in the Constitution not only a set of fundamental norms, but the concrete expression of the principles called to guide our common life – Mattarella continued. On April 25, I will go to San Severino Marche, a city awarded by the Gold Medal of Civil Merit, which has made a significant contribution to the struggle of Liberation, paying a high price in terms of suffering and sacrifice.”.
