Giro d’Italia 2026: pink jersey marks 80 years of the Republic

Special edition design honors Italy’s history as the race blends tradition, identity, and international reach

One hundred nine years of history pass along Italy’s roadways, each converted into a symbol. The pink jersey returns to the spotlight and, for the 109th edition of the Giro d’Italia, tells something more. The new jersey, which was unveiled in the evocative Protomoteca hall in Rome’s Campidoglio, is more than just the race leader’s distinguishing insignia; it is a monument to the country’s heritage. Inside the collar, there is an insert commemorating the Italian Republic’s 80th anniversary, with the phrases “Sport that unites, Italy that inspires”, complemented by the words “1946-2026 – 80 years – Italian Republic”. A subtle but effective reminder that connects one of the country’s most popular sporting events to its history and identity. The Giro will begin on May 8th in Nessebar, Bulgaria, and end on May 31st in the capital, thus expanding its international reach. Despite the openness to the world, the link with Italy and its territories is strong, and the race provides a unique opportunity to highlight this. The pink jersey, first worn by Learco Guerra in 1931, is currently part of a collaboration with partners who symbolize the country’s brilliance. Among these is the institutional brand “Io sono Friuli Venezia Giulia”, which is the edition’s official sponsor. The goal of this initiative is to strengthen the region’s territory, businesses, and identity while keeping sustainability and innovation in mind.
