On the designer’s birthday, May 11th, the Ministry of Economy and Finance issued the “Valentino Garavani Commemorative Coin”, which was made by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in two versions: gold and silver. A posthumous tribute to Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani, one of the most legendary figures in global fashion. Garavani was born in Voghera, near Milan, on May 11, 1932, and passed away on January 19 this year. Founder of the namesake design brand, he was for decades the global embodiment of Italian luxury, dressed queens, first ladies, and Hollywood stars in his signature red—”Valentino red”—which became an icon of international taste. The coin honors a major figure in the history of world fashion who had a creative vision that combined elegance, beauty, and craftsmanship. Giancarlo Giammetti, the designer’s longstanding partner and right-hand man, described the initiative as “a gesture of extraordinary symbolic value”. Valentino had garnered numerous international accolades over the years, including the Golden Keys to the City of Beverly Hills in 1988 and induction into the American Academy of Achievement Hall of Fame in 2017, making him the first European designer to receive this honor.
