CAGLIARI (ITALPRESS) – Subscribed by the Regional Councillor of Tourism Franco Cuccureddu and the mayors of the Municipalities of Alghero, Cagliari, Elmas, Golfo Aranci, Olbia, Oristano, Porto Torres, Santa Giusta, Santa Teresa Gallura and Tortolì, the protocol of understanding “Le Porte della Sardegna”, a programme of regional direction, endowment to promote the realization of cohesied investments and coordinated.
The program “Le Porte della Sardegna” covers ten municipalities where airports are located, with national and international traffic, and ports with passenger and international and national commercial traffic.
The Regional Department of Tourism has three strategic projects in the FFSC, the Development and Cohesion Fund. One linked to cultural tourism with the cities holds, one on tourism in the villages and the third, what we now subscribe, concerns the Ports of Sardinia, that is the places of access, of first contact of tourists with our region. We want to make these places more welcoming, more decorated in the immediate vicinity of the three main airports of Sardinia and the six ports in which there is commercial traffic with the peninsula and with the rest of Europe.
Twelve million euros will therefore be allocated to access roads, pitches, benches, planters. to make these places as welcoming as possible, since it is the first impact that the tourist has with our region, but also the last image, the last memory that will take away in Sardinia. So by improving access, improving the doors of Sardinia, we also believe we can guarantee a better quality of the tourist image of our region but also an extra commitment to the loyalty of the tourist. ”, he emphasized the Councillor Franco Cuccureddu. The project is one of the strategic interventions in the field of tourism and hospitality, destined to the requalification and valorization of the main areas of access to Sardinia.
The resources have been distributed substantially uniformly between the territories concerned, with a financing of 1.333.333 euros for each of the main Ports of Sardinia. For the municipalities of Oristano and Santa Giusta, that share the same harbour system of reference, the assigned amount is pairs to 666.666 euros each, corresponds to 50 percent of the ordinary quota previewed for the other interventions.
The line of action is born from the desire to qualify the spaces crossed daily by travellers arriving and leaving from the island, improving the urban quality, landscape and functional of the areas outside the ports and airports and contributing to strengthen the image of Sardinia as a modern, welcoming and sustainable tourist destination.
The interventions will cover, among others, the redevelopment of landscape and green, the lighting, the billboard, the urban furniture, the access routes, the road and the rest areas, with particular attention to the areas facing ports and airports. The goal is to transform the main entrance doors of Sardinia from simple transit sites to spaces capable of representing the cultural, landscape and environmental identity of the island, contributing to build a coordinated and recognizable image of the Sardinia destination while respecting the specificities of the individual territories. The program involves the main nodes of marine and air connection of the region. Among these are the requalification of the airport areas of Alghero and Elmas, the valorization of the harbour and airport areas of Olbia, the requalification of the harbour accesses of Golfo Aranci, Porto Torres, Oristano, Santa Giusta, Santa Teresa di Gallura and Arbatax, the improvement of the urban connections between the port and the city center of Cagliari and further interventions of landscape and urban qualification in the municipalities involved.
The resources were shared between the municipalities on the basis of the investment programmes approved by the Regional Council with Deliberation no. 42/31 of August 13, 2026. The interventions will be implemented by means of specific conventions that will discipline the procedural, financial and monitoring aspects, in compliance with the chronoprogrammes provided for in the FSC programming and must be completed by 2030.
“The exit from the airport or the port is the first impact that the visitor has with Sardinia, is that first impression – underline the Councillor Franco Cuccureddu – that will have a significant role on the overall judgment on the destination, and therefore on the possibility of loyalty. In the same way, on arrival at the port or at the airport, there is the last image of Sardinia, which will take you to travel memories. “For these reasons – the Councillor of Tourism concludes – this project has a strategic importance, and we hope that the municipalities, with the support of the Region, want to transform it into a real network, aimed at creating coordinated initiatives to ensure the best possible impact of the visitor with our island, in times, potentially critical, of arrival and departure from Sardinia”.
