ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The period of summer exodus 2026 on the road and motorway network Anas closes with 485 million transits. The data, detected by the Anas Road Mobility Observatory (FS Italian Group) between July 16th and today, September 6th, through about 660 monitoring plants, confirms high traffic volumes, but distributed over a wider and less concentrated time span on weekends. Despite the intensity of flows, there were no significant criticalities on the network. The still high temperatures have favoured, even on this weekend, local movements towards sea resorts. The afternoon and the evening of today are characterized by the last reentries, in particular in the regions of the North, in view of the start of the new school year.
“Summer 2026 confirms an ever more distributed mobility over time – said the managing director of Anas, Claudio Andrea Gemme – 485 million transits were recorded throughout the entire itinerary of the peninsula. This closes a summer exodus with volumes of traffic consistent with expectations. The transits detected on the Anas network have substantially respected the Observatory’s forecasts, confirming the regularity of the movements along the main directions. A more aware planning of travel has favoured a better distribution of flows, helping to contain congestion and make travel more regular and safe. Early information on the network conditions helps citizens choose when to travel and organize better times and routes. The Observatory’s data is therefore an essential tool for improving mobility management and user-oriented services. This result was also made possible by the work of the women and men of Anas who, throughout the summer, secured the territory, monitoring the network, assistance and information to motorists. The data collected indicates a change in travel habits. During the summer shifts affected every day of the week, with substantial flows even on weekdays. This increased time distribution has reduced traffic concentration on traditionally more critical days. A significant figure emerges from the Campania section of the A2 “Mediterranean Highway”. In the period considered, a total of 6.5 million transits were recorded in the two points of observation: at the entrance of Salerno for vehicles heading south and to Buonabitacolo for those traveling north. Monitoring systems along the network have allowed to follow the trend of flows in relation to the main destinations, identifying in particular the direct movements to the southern regions and analyzing the distribution over time.
The first substantial flows of the exodus were recorded on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th July, when the traffic of crossing was double compared to the average values. The increase was repeated, with greater intensity, Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August. From Monday, August 3, the flows to the South were kept high even on weekdays, especially on Monday and Tuesday, with increases comparable to those of weekends. On Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th August, for example, increases compared to average values were approximately 130% and 180% respectively. The distribution of travel throughout the week was even more evident during the counterexodus from the southern regions. The first reentries began before Ferragosto and grew considerably from Thursday, August 20. In the following days the increments reached peaks of 300-350% on weekends and of 150-200% on weekdays.
Over the last few days, the last reentries from the resorts and local travels have been overlapped. In the weekend just spent the total traffic has decreased by 5% compared to the same period of 2025, both on the metropolitan and on the tourist ones. This also confirms a different time distribution of travel compared to last year. In comparison with the previous weekend, instead, the traffic on the metropolitan networks has increased on average of 2.3%, while that on the directors towards the seaside resorts has decreased by 0.8%. The trend indicates the substantial completion of the summer period and the gradual recovery of ordinary mobility. The most significant increments on the metropolitan directions were found, among other things, on the A90 “Great Anulare” of Rome and on the highway 36 “of Lake Como and Spluga”.
On Friday and Saturday, 150,215 vehicles have passed on the A2 between the A30 and the Salerno knot. After grafting with the Naples branch of the A2, which ensures the connection with the A3 Napoli-Salerno highway, the transits detected were 118.472. The maximum volume was recorded in Pontecagnano, with 199,694 vehicles. 43.554 transits were recorded in Rivello and 34,887 in Morano Calabro. Continuing south, 65,915 vehicles have passed to Dipignano, after Cosenza, 60,493 in Falerna, 56,177 in Palmi and 57,074 in Villa San Giovanni. On the A19 Dir 167,082 transits were recorded near Palermo. On the A19 the vehicles detected were 93.005 in Altavilla Milicia, 30.830 in Alimena and 24.397 in Caltavuturo. On the A90 “Grande Raccordo Anulare” of Rome were recorded 309,900 transits between Laurentina and Eur, 282.249 between Pisana and Aurelia, 265,984 between Cassia-Tomba di Nerone and Cassia Veientana-Sant’Andrea, 256.965 at Prenestina-A24, 253.295 between Tiburtina and Nomentana and 253.080 between Pisana and A24.
. On the A91 the maximum volume was found in Fiumicino, with 243.024 transits. On the highway 148 “Pontina” were recorded 144,277 vehicles in Rome, 89,222 in Latina and 50,758 in the stretch of Sabaudia. Along the Adriatic, 44.424 transits were recorded in Rovigo, 65,834 in Ravenna and 69,018 in Rimini. 46,810 vehicles in Falconara and 43.647 in Fermo have passed in the Marche. In Abruzzo 47,643 transits were recorded in Alba Adriatica and 21,917 in Vasto. The highest volumes were recorded in Puglia, with 306.033 transits to Bari and 127.296 to Monopoli. On the Tyrrhenian side, between Friday and Saturday, along the highway 1 “Aurelia” were recorded 51.080 transits in Montalto di Castro, in Lazio, and 25,176 in Ventimiglia, in Liguria. In Tuscany 62,796 vehicles were detected in Grosseto and 43.233 in Livorno.
Along the southern Tyrrhenian dorsal, the largest volumes were recorded in Capaccio Paestum, with 73.666 transits, followed by Eboli with 56.370, Vibo Valentia with 50.420 and Nocera Terinese with 23.405. On the highway 106 “Jonica” 62.451 transits were detected in Reggio Calabria, 59.169 in Castellaneta and 53.133 in Simeri Crichi. On the highway 51 26,715 transits were recorded between Belluno and Ponte nelle Alpi, 59.524 in Longarone and 24,360 in Valle di Cadore.
