Medicine, Bernini “Stop the closed number and entrance tests”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Green light from the Senate’s 7th Commission to the proxy bill that revises the methods of access to degree programs in medicine and surgery, dentistry and dental prosthetics and veterinary medicine. The reform includes the abolition of the first-semester closed number, allowing open enrollment for all aspiring physicians without taking entrance tests. The goal is to reorganize the medical and health professions system with a view to sustainability for both universities and the NHS. The bill delegating authority to the government aims to ensure fairer selection based on students’ acquired skills. In fact, access will be regulated through training credits and the position in a national ranking achieved. “This day represents a historic step to guarantee all young people the opportunity to become professionals in the medical field,” said the Minister of University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini. “The need for future new doctors is 30 thousand more professionals in the next seven years. To meet it, we have already increased the available places for medical and surgical and veterinary degree programs. But with today we completely revise the selection criteria. For the first year we abolish the closed number and entrance tests, but we provide a semester-filter with characterizing exams, the results of which will still be recognized for alternative educational paths. In this way, we are not only investing in the right aspirations of our students, but also guaranteeing quality preparation through an educational offering of excellence. “The reform also includes orientation initiatives as early as the last years of secondary school, with specific pathways to facilitate entry into degree programs. Students will be able to benefit from targeted training and, in case of non-admission to the second semester, recognition of credits acquired to continue in other study paths. “This strategy aims to optimize available resources and ensure quality preparation in a crucial field for the country,” the Ministry of University and Research explained in a note.
