MOSCA (RUSSIA) (ITALPRESS) – Moscow raises the level of warning about NATO’s military reinforcement along the eastern flank, focusing attention on Kaliningrad and Lithuania. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, at the end of the talks with the homologue of Timor-Leste Bendito dos Santos Freitas, said that Russia follows the indications on the new allied plans and “resta vigile”, while saying to look “philosophically” to news on NATO’s preparation for a possible conflict.
Lavrov recalled the recent words of Vladimir Putin, according to which an attack against Kaliningrad or any other Russian region would receive “one answer”. On the same line the spokesman of the Kremlin Dmitry Peskov, according to which the possible displacement in Lithuania of further NATO infrastructure and, above all, of nuclear weapons would constitute “another significant escalation of tensions” and would force Moscow to adopt “all the necessary measures to ensure its safety”.
The declarations come as the Alliance consolidates the Regional Defence Plans, the Forward Land Forces and Eastern Sentry activities along the eastern border, measures that NATO defines “defensive, proportionate and transparent”.
The “Theory of Victory”, the operational concept that Saceur, General Alexus Grynkewich, should present on 12 October in Poland and aims to integrate conventional forces, unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, stratified defences and targeting capabilities to stop any aggression.
Peskov finally dismissed as “totally unfounded” the German accusations about the so-called Russian “shade war” in Europe, claiming that they would serve to build “an ephemeral enemy” to justify the increase in military spending. The comparison thus returns two opposite readings of the same process: for Moscow the expansion of allied devices increases the risk of escalation; for NATO the strengthening of the East flank serves to make deterrence credible and to prevent a conflict from starting.
