MILAN (ITALPRESS) – The measures on sustainable management of data centers and those on the prevention of significant accidents: these were the main measures presented by the regional Councillor for the Environment and Climate of Lombardy Region Giorgio Maione on the occasion of the Climate Week in New York, an event scheduled for September 27, 2026. The key theme of this year’s edition is the need to pass ‘words to facts’ and give a reinforcing to the concrete implementation of global initiatives on the fight against climate change, summarized by the slogan ‘Energy, and Action’.
Specifically, two important appointments on the agenda, events promoted within the Under2 Coalition, the global alliance of subnational governments committed to achieving zero emissions target by 2050. On the occasion of the conference ‘Subnational Approaches to Managing Data Center Growth’, the excellence of the Lombard model was presented in front of a panel of representatives of over 50 subnational governments and major U.S. cities. Climate Alliance Purpose illustrating the new implementation guidelines under data center law. During the ‘Governors’ Climate Leadership Dialogue’, the General Assembly, which brings together the leaders of the regions that are members of the network, was instead deepened the new bill on the risks of significant accidents, approved last week by the Joint and ready to examine the Regional Council.
Great appreciation was recorded for data center measurements. The debate with the different representatives of subnational governments was an opportunity to share best practices and successful management models, implemented to cope with the rapid growth of these technologies and limit its environmental impact. In this context, the key points of the measure were illustrated, including the new criteria for the localization of these infrastructures on the territory, such as access to premiality in case of settlement on at least 75% of abandoned areas; the recovery of heat up to 35% by 2030 and the prohibition of use of drinking water for cooling. With regard to project compliance, regional guidelines provide an assessment through a sieve Energy Report based on four European performance indicators (Energy Efficiency, Wue for Water Consumption, Erf for Thermal Recovery and Ref for Renewables).

The role of subnational governments in making ecological transition a factor of economic growth was at the heart of the conference during which the Councillor Maione explained the new regional law on relevant accidents.
Among the key points of the provision is a system of premiality that enhances the most virtuous enterprises in the matter of prevention and a more important role of the Municipalities in urban planning, with the updating of the Technical Process for the Relevante Risk in the Government Plans of the Territory. “Illustrating this measure to the New York Climate Week – Maione said – means to reaffirm in an important international showcase the vision of this Junta: sustainability as a key factor for industrial development.”.
