ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Digital also leaves its footprint. Behind every online search, AI question, video watched stream or file uploaded to the cloud hides an environmental impact that is often unfamiliar. According to the data of the last Observatory Youth & Sustainability promoted by Angelini Industries in collaboration with Quorum/YouTrend and CSA Research, in Italy almost one under 30 out of two (46%), considers the environmental impacts of technology as serious as those associated with fossil fuels or deforestation; a share that drops to 41% in the rest of the population. For young people, the first action is to reduce the energy consumption of new devices (45%). To do so, 64% of the young respondents use their devices efficiently, while the propensity to sustainable and circular solutions such as the purchase of smartphones and computers used or regenerated (22%).
Taking a closer look at the relationship of young people with sustainability, 57% of Under 30 consider it primarily linked to the reduction of the environmental impact of human activities (an increase of 6 percentage points compared to 2025) and over a young out of three (34%) believes that it means acting to jointly promote environmental protection and social well-being. This last share recorded an increase of 8 percentage points compared to the previous edition of the Observatory, when it stood at 26%. An approach, that of young people to sustainability, which is also reflected in the purchasing choices: the percentage of young people willing to pay a little more, at the same quality, for a truly sustainable product stands at 60%, compared with 42% of the rest of the population. Even with respect to the boycott of socially iniquious brands, there is a significant generational gap: 47% of the Under 30 declares to have done so, compared to 35% of the Over 30. However, there is also a skeptical component with a 56% of respondents convinced that sustainability objectives are intended not to be achieved. 42% of the under 30 is convinced that it is for the new generations to give the greater impetus to sustainability, while, compared to last year’s survey, it passes from 37% to 34% the share of those who entrust this responsibility to politics and the great global powers.
