ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Israel’s reaction was beyond what it should be, we always said it was unacceptable what was happening, even to Unifil troops. We have always said that the goal is a cease-fire. However, we cannot deny their right to self-defense because we must not forget that everything started with Hamas and that massacre.” So said Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani at the concluding press conference of the G7 Development Ministers’ meeting in Pescara. “Two peoples and two states is our position. We work for peace and I think that is what we have done here in Pescara,” he recalled. On Lebanon, “the Italian proposal is very clear: the presence of Unifil with new rules of engagement, it is a common sense proposal and it seems to me that the American one is also going in this direction, it seems to me that it is an idea that the Israelis also like and I don’t think the Lebanese will mind. We need to work for peace and not to please one contender or another,” Tajani stressed. “Israel feels secure if there is this double filter, we also want to strengthen the Lebanese state, I think it is right to get to the election of the president of the Republic, we need a leadership that can dialogue for a negotiation, also, we need to strengthen the Lebanese armed forces, the Italian army forms a part of them, now the training is suspended but this is the way forward,” he noted.
