Massimo Agosti new president of the Italian Society of Neonatology

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “The so-called “First 1000 days,” from conception to 2 years of life, condition the long-term health of human beings. Neonatology has, therefore, a fundamental role and responsibility to create, together with families, the optimal conditions to be able to guarantee the best possible future for each newborn, building multidisciplinary and multiprofessional bridges with the perinatal, pediatric and specialist fields. We will continue to engage in an even more active and constructive dialogue with the institutions, both at the national and regional levels, as privileged interlocutors in decisions that affect health policies for newborns, so that lasting strategies can be adopted, based on data and scientific evidence of which our Society is a guarantor. The rapid epidemiological, demographic and social changes, influenced by the recent pandemic crisis and a denatality that shows no sign of abating, together with the difficulty of finding dedicated resources (human and technological) are accentuating significant problems in the neonatology field, highlighting critical issues that we cannot ignore, because every newborn deserves the same health opportunities, regardless of where he or she is born.” This was stated by Massimo Agosti, Full Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Insubria, where he directs the School of Pediatrics, as well as Director of Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care and Maternal and Infant Department at Del Ponte Hospital in Varese, Coordinator of the Working Group “Birth Pathway” and Member of the “Vaccines Commission” of the Lombardy Region, elected President of the Italian Society of Neonatology (SIN), for the three-year period 2024-27, in Padua, Italy, during the XXX National Congress of the SIN.The newly elected president is the author of numerous scientific articles in the field of neonatology in international journals, among the main fields of interest: nutrition with particular regard to the promotion of maternal breastfeeding, gastroenterological aspects of the healthy and premature newborn, prevention and therapy against neonatal infections, and the focus of the overall care of the newborn with his family both during the ICU stay and after discharge, with integrated follow-up systems with the territory.Massimo Agosti will lead the SIN together with the new Board of Directors, composed of: Gina Ancora, Rimini (Vice-President), Alessandra Coscia, Turin (Treasurer), and Board members Arianna Aceti (Bologna), Antonino Di Toro (Naples), Eloisa Gitto (Messina), Simonetta Picone (Rome), Daniele Trevisanuto (Padua), and Stefania Troiani (Perugia).Among the main goals of the new mandate: Promote and support maternal breastfeeding for all newborns, including the smallest and most fragile, and the availability of donated human bank milk; collaborate with families in all care settings (physiology, minor pathology, neonatal intensive care, follow up); apply organizational standards and European standards of care centered on the newborn and the family, primarily the opening of the Neonatal Intensive Care Units h24 to parents, so that they can be present and close to their hospitalized children; ensuring a neonatal emergency transport service evenly distributed throughout the country; providing adequate neonatology training, supporting its scientific research for physicians specializing in pediatrics; and involving the various professional figures in a continuum of collaboration between hospital and territory for the care of all newborns. “The challenges we face are many, but each of them also represents an opportunity; we must continue to work together to build a system that puts the newborn and the whole family at the center, guaranteeing adequate and accessible care in a homogeneous way, to promote, from the newborn period, quality health,” President Agosti concludes.
