ROME (ITALPRESS) – “If I am confirmed, I am committed to working alongside you for the coming months: I will be ready to meet with you in the first weeks of my term to discuss the format for our dialogues, I am available to listen to any suggestions on how to proceed.” So said Executive Vice-President-designate of the European Commission in charge of Cohesion and Reforms, Raffaele Fitto, at a hearing in the European Parliament. “Investments must be linked to reforms, we must work to strengthen this nexus as well as the capacities of administrations: the goal is to achieve reforms and investments by 2026,” Fitto continued. “The simplification of bureaucratic procedures is a central issue: the delegation to Commissioner Dombrovskis is fundamental for the future of Europe,” he stresses. “In recent weeks I have asked for a meeting with the president of the Committee of European Regions, since these will be the first beneficiaries of our measures. Our goal is to strengthen cohesion policies, and to do this we must work together, giving a targeted response on the needs of the territories. “I want to remember that five years ago I was coordinator of my party and despite political differences I voted for the outgoing Commissioner Ferreira, because a sense of general responsibility was prevalent. And never before have we to put the general interest before particular ones. Seventy-five years ago many men made a contribution to the birth of Europe: when I learned that the hearing would be held in this hall named after Alcide De Gasperi, I thought long and hard. This is one of the founding fathers of Europe; his thinking is still relevant today. This year is the 75th anniversary of De Gasperi’s death. I remember him with great emotion. We must remember where we come from in order to create a credible perspective for the future.”
