Mercedes-AMG develops first high-performance SUV

ROME (ITALPRESS) – For the first time in its 57-year history, Mercedes-AMG is developing an SUV entirely in-house. The innovative off-roader, “Born in Affalterbach,” is built on the AMG.EA native high-performance electric car platform. The development vehicles will undergo their first test drives this winter. High-performance SUVs have long been a cornerstone of the AMG portfolio. More than 25 years ago, the Affalterbach-based sports and performance car brand pioneered this segment with the launch of the ML 55 AMG. The sporty off-road class quickly won the hearts of customers, registering high growth rates ever since. Today, Mercedes AMG boasts an SUV range of six models: the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS and EQE SUVs. The iconic Mercedes AMG G 63 GelĂ ndewagen represents the pinnacle of the high-performance off-road lineup. In this latest project, Mercedes AMG developed the entire vehicle architecture for the first time. This full-size SUV will be the second model built on the AMG.EA all-electric high-performance platform. It also represents the sixth vehicle entirely developed by the performance specialists in Affalterbach, joining the first AMG.EA model currently undergoing testing, as well as the GT, SL, previous-generation GT and SLS models. “For many years, SUVs have been among our most popular models. With this ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly eye-catching high-performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform. Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second.’ This means that the vehicles not only excel as EVs, but also embody AMG’s core qualities of excitement and performance,” says Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Mercedes AMG and Head of the Mercedes Benz G-Class and Mercedes Maybach divisions.
