ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Violence against women presents alarming numbers. It is a behavior that finds no justification, rooted in inequalities, gender stereotypes and cultures that tolerate or minimize abuse, which often occurs even in the family environment.” This was stated in a note by the pesident of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of Nov. 25, the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. “The Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, also known as the Istanbul Convention, is the first legally binding instrument to have recognized gender-based violence as a violation of human rights,” the head of state continued. “Italy ratified the Convention in 2013, equipping itself with safeguards to ensure full protection for victims of gender-based violence. What has been done so far is not, however, sufficient to safeguard women, including very young women, who continue to see their rights violated. It is an emergency that continues. “These are mothers, sisters, daughters, people with dreams and plans who see their right to be able to live a free and dignified life violated, women who are fighting for their independence, to be able to choose their own destiny,” Mattarella stressed. “No excuses” is the theme proposed by the United Nations to mark today’s day. It is even superfluous to emphasize that, therefore, there are no acceptable excuses to justify gender-based violence. Concrete actions are needed. It is essential to continue working to eradicate the prejudices and discriminatory attitudes that still make women weaker in society, work and family. Institutions, civil society forces must support women in denouncing any form of abuse, offering protection and adequate support. It is a value for the entire society to ensure that the human rights of the female universe are fully guaranteed,” the president of the Republic concluded.
