Swg-Italian female journalists study, young males impatient on equality

ROME (ITALPRESS) – The prevalence of gender stereotypes among Italians is at an all-time low, but younger males seem to show a clear impatience with equality that is expressed in a general attitude of recalling the centrality of the male role, even within spaces historically more perceived as female-dominated. This is what emerges from the research “Gender violence: perception and opinion of the Italian population,” carried out by SWG for Giornaliste Italiane. With respect to gender violence, the basic attitude of Italians highlights, on the one hand, the full and incontrovertible responsibility attributed to those who act the violence, especially if the victim is not in a position to oppose it, and on the other hand, the need for a woman to always remain on guard and avoid situations that could potentially put her in danger. And for 4 out of 10 Italians, some women put themselves in danger.Again, the opinion of young men is decidedly more absolving toward the male gender, while among young women all forms that limit their freedom are considered unacceptable. The identikit of the perpetrator of violence against women is also profoundly different between young males and young females: for the former, it corresponds to the characteristics of the person on the fringes of society, with a criminal record and mental problems; among young females, it looks much more like the neighbor. And if for 8 out of 10 Italians a woman who has suffered violence should always file a complaint, this certainty drops to 74 percent among young women and 63 percent among young men.On the educational issue, however, the agreement is decidedly more across the board: parents and schools have a responsibility to work to transmit a correct dimension of gender relations. The survey was conducted through online interviews using the CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interview) method on a sample of 837 Italian citizens over 18 years old, representative of the Italian population by gender, age, geographical area of origin, educational qualification and party voted in the last elections. The interviews were administered from November 13 to 15, 2024.
