Cybersecurity, Fontana “Strengthening response capacity to new pitfalls”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “At the end of the last G7 of lower house presidents in Verona, I had stressed the importance of this initiative taken by the Italian Parliament. And I had also recalled the role of parliamentary diplomacy, which provides an opportunity to promote dialogue between legislative institutions and to strengthen international cooperation in security matters. During the work of this Meeting we will also be able to count on the valuable contribution of institutional figures from some of Italy’s main allied countries. The adoption of a coordinated approach is consistent with the planetary dimension of the challenges faced by the intelligence services.” This was said by the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana, in his speech at the meeting of the Parliamentary Commissions of Control on Intelligence of the G7 countries, in Montecitorio. “The international context is in fact marked by strong tensions, with direct consequences under the geopolitical profile,” Fontana stressed. “In addition to sowing death and destruction, the conflicts underway threaten the world order, with obvious consequences for collective security. The wars that have returned to inflame our continent and the Middle East cause great instability. They in turn cause migration crises, human rights violations, food and energy insecurity. I am thinking especially of the Mediterranean area and the African continent. “The protection of national interests also makes it necessary to strengthen our capacity to respond against new pitfalls. I am referring in particular to cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and the increased vulnerability of computer networks and systems. The growing interconnections between cybersecurity, geopolitical instability and economic systems require integrated and cutting-edge responses to protect social and economic stability from increasingly sophisticated and complex threats,” the Chamber president continued. “From the economic-financial point of view, it is essential to ensure the proper functioning of the production system and the transparency of financial flows, to prevent criminal groups from infiltrating the country’s social and economic fabric. Faced with these major challenges, intelligence services are required to act efficiently and swiftly, basing their actions on stringent confidentiality constraints. In a democratic society, the activities of the security apparatuses are subject to strict parliamentary oversight, which is called upon to ensure that they are carried out in compliance with the Constitution and the laws. “For Fontana, “Parliaments, the custodians of popular sovereignty, have the responsibility to ensure that the activities of the security apparatuses are always oriented toward the protection of fundamental rights and collective interests. The ability of parliaments to maintain a constant and constructive dialogue with other national and international institutions is essential to effectively address common challenges and strengthen citizens’ trust in democratic mechanisms. “Meetings such as today’s are indispensable to develop a broad reflection and allow for an exchange of experiences and best practices in an area of strategic importance. I am certain that, thanks to the qualified interventions of the speakers and the subsequent moments of debate, useful insights and reflections will emerge,” concluded the Chamber president. “I hope, therefore, that today’s confrontation, thanks to the institutional dialogue between the delegations, can contribute concretely to strengthening global security and laying the foundations for a peaceful future. It is our responsibility to continue working together to build a future of hope for future generations.”
