Syria, Tajani “Need pragmatism, let’s be vigilant”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – In Syria “we have to be pragmatic. A dictatorship is over, and it is an end that marks the defeat of Iran and Russia that supported it. Now forces that are different from each other are coming to power. The leader has sent a message of moderation: no veils for women, amnesty for Assad’s military, and he seems to want to dialogue with the rest of the world.” So says Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to Restart on Raitre. “The guarantor of stability in the area seems for the moment to be Turkey. I spoke with the Turkish foreign minister and asked for guarantees for Italians and for minorities, especially Christians. The unity of Syria is important, otherwise there is civil war,” Tajani stressed. “We must continue our diplomatic action, our embassy has always been respected, we continue to monitor the situation, the government has decided to block the examination of asylum applications, it is a temporary choice. Without civil war, I exclude mass arrivals, in fact many Syrians are returning home, but we have to monitor. We leave the embassy in Damascus open precisely to follow the evolution of the situation. There is no risk of immigration and irregular and terrorism, but we need to be vigilant.”
