Mattarella “Human rights continue to be threatened and violated”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “In the life of the international community, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in the aftermath of World War II, represents a milestone, recognizing the irrepressible dignity of the person, a principle that inspires our Constitution.” This was stated in a note by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of World Human Rights Day. “Despite the signing of the Declaration by the States Parties to the United Nations, human rights continue to be threatened and violated in different parts of the world,” the head of state added. “Violence and abuse against women, children and the most fragile individuals are daily occurrences, especially where armed conflicts are ongoing. In some countries, the most basic democratic freedoms are brutally ignored, and even the exercise of the vote – the cornerstone of any democracy – is thwarted. “In an international conjuncture characterized by crisis, it is necessary to reaffirm the need for the protection of the rights of every person, in all circumstances,” Mattarella concludes. “On the occasion of the Day that emphasizes the centrality of human rights, the Republic reaffirms the value of the norms of international law and international humanitarian law, without which any prospect of lasting peace and development of peoples is illusory.
