MILAN (ITALPRESS) – The 2024/2025 academic year of Iulm University was inaugurated today, which was attended by University and Research Minister Anna Maria Bernini. Also present at the ceremony along with the new rector, Professor Valentina Garavaglia, were Anna Scavuzzo, deputy mayor of Milan and Councillor for Education, and Marco Alparone, vice president of the Lombardy Region and Councillor for Budget and Finance. In the review that is drawn at each academic year opening, the growth of international students on campus by more than 50 percent compared to the past was highlighted. In fact, in recent years, IULM University has been committed to internationality, increasing its educational offerings in English, signing more than three hundred agreements in 30 countries and conventions with 171 universities. “Internationalization in times of war,” said Chancellor Garavaglia, “for IULM also means welcoming refugee students, of Ukrainian, Afghan, Belorussian, Russian and Syrian nationalities, free of charge within its courses and residences. Not only are they totally exempt from tuition, but they have a bed, a daily meal and a contribution for the evening meal.” “For a non-state university, this is a definite choice, as we believe that conflicts are the fruit of ignorance, never of culture, and that the first defense of democracy is the defense of intelligence, defending this principle for us is already a declaration of peace,” he concluded.
