MILAN (ITALPRESS) – The classic Boxing Day round of volleyball confirmed what is likely to be the duel until the end of the Superleague regular season: Perugia has no intention of losing (14 wins out of 14), Trento wants to strike back blow by blow.
It was all easy for the second in the class, which beat Milan 3-0. First set managed by the hosts and closed on 25-18, some more difficulties in the second partial: the guests tried to put their heads ahead going on +4, but in the crucial moment Trento reacted going to close on 25-23. Several errors for Roberto Piazza’s men, the reigning European champions closed the third and final set winning 25-19, the best scorer of the day was Alessandro Michieletto (17 total points). Civitanova instead wasted a good opportunity, Monza winning 3-2 by winning in the tie break: after the first set won by the hosts (25-13), Medei’s team overturned the score (22-25 and 17-25 the partials). Monza evened the score by winning the fourth set 31-29; at the last came the fourth win of the season (15-12) for the Brianzoli after a really bad period. Reigning champions Perugia also smiled, with Modena ending 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-21): +5 for Giannelli and teammates over Trento (with one match to spare), Civitanova remains third at -11, still with a match to make up. Victory also for Piacenza that liquidates Cisterna 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 27-25), decisive the performance of Alessandro Bovolenta, author of 19 points.
In the lower part of the standings Padua returns to success after five consecutive defeats, against Taranto ends 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 24-26, 25-19), the performance of Serbian Masulovic, author of 20 points, stands out. Grottazzolina almost pulled off a feat at home against Verona: the hosts, ahead two sets (25-17, 25-16), let themselves be caught up in the third and fourth sets (23-25, 17-25). The tie break won 15-13 was decisive; the best scorer of the match was the usual Keita, with 20 points scored.
On Sunday 29, it’s back on the court with the Italian Cup quarterfinals (final four on January 25 and 26 in Casalecchio di Reno, Bologna): Perugia will face Modena, Trento will welcome Cisterna, and Verona-Piacenza and Civitanova-Milan will close the picture. The championship will return on Jan. 5 and 6 with the fourth return day of the Superleague.
