Brignone wins Super G in Cortina and dominates overall standings”

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO (ITALPRESS) – Federica Brignone won the Super G in Cortina d’Ampezzo, valid for the Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup. The Italian, with a time of 1’21″64 preceded on the podium the two Swiss Lara Gut Behrami and Corinne Suter, sat 0″58 and 1″08 respectively.
A perfect race for the 34-year-old from La Salle, which is worth the
31st career success in the highest circuit for the champion from Valle d’Aosta, the 11th pearl in super-G, the fourth in a season that has already seen her win in giant (Sòlden and Semmering) and downhill in St. Anton. Brignone continues to rewrite records on all fronts, improving them race after race: at 34, she is the oldest World Cup winner, as well as leading the list of multiple Italian winners in history. And she stretches to the top of the overall standings.
By a whisker off the podium Elena Curtoni, fourth, who grows laps but misses the appointment with the top three by only three hundredths of a second. Austria’s Riccarda Haaser (+1″14) and Norway’s Kajsa Lie (+1″22) are fifth and sixth ahead of a Sofia Goggia seventh at 1″25, less precise than the previous day’s downhill.
Entering close to the top ten then are Laura Pirovano, 12th at 1″60, and Roberta Melesi, 14th at 1″72; just outside the points zone are Nadia Delago (+3″03), Nicol Delago (+3″09) and Vicky Bernardi (+3″23), with Sara Thaler at 3″98.
Marta Bassino, on the other hand, did not finish the event, having run into a line error in the Rumerlo zone.
Federica Brignone stretches her lead in the overall standings: with 639 points, the Italian is 106 lengths ahead of Camille Rast and 132 ahead of Sara Hector. The SuperG red bib remains on the shoulders of Gut Behrami (285), but Brignone (250) and Goggia (196) remain in her wake; Curtoni moves up and is sixth (149).
Tuesday, Jan. 21, it’s back to the wide gates of the KronPlatz giant slope: first run on the Erta slope at 10:30 a.m., second three hours later.
“Today I got exactly what I had in my head,” Brignone said at the end of the race, “I attacked, I felt fast, I always kept my foot on the accelerator: I had very good feelings and when at the finish line I saw the lead on Suter I said to myself that it could be the right day. It was a tactical superG: there was room to let go of the skis, but also to be approached intelligently to better manage the high speed. It’s one of those days when you say-what a great day! I feel proud of what I did this weekend: how long you chase a result, getting it gives great satisfaction. I definitely wanted to be on the podium in Cortina, and these two days are really great for my career.”
