Meloni announces energy interconnection with Emirates and Albania

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “With Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama we will sign an extremely important agreement today, a commitment to build a new energy interconnection to produce green energy in Albania and export part of that energy to Italy through an undersea cable across the Adriatic Sea. We strongly believe in this project and I am very proud of this initiative, because it shows concretely that new forms of cooperation can be built even between seemingly distant partners.”
Thus Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in her speech at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. According to Meloni, “Italy is a candidate to become the strategic hub of energy flows between Europe and Africa. We are a natural platform in the Mediterranean and this allows us to act as a supply and distribution hub and potential of Africa with Europe’s energy demand.” In addition, “if we want to make a concrete and sustainable energy transition, we have to make sure it is done with adequate infrastructure. I am sure that developing interconnections can be the key to a new energy diplomacy to multiply opportunities for cooperation among us and generate shared benefits among all. With this approach, Italy wants to become a strategic hub for energy flows between Europe and Africa. We are a natural platform in the Mediterranean.” The premier went on to stress that “the future of the energy transition depends on our ability to strike a balance between sustainability and innovation” and “we will not succeed if we continue to pursue decarbonization at the price of economic desertification.”
