Mattarella “Tensions over return to 19th-century power politics”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “It is a period of great uncertainty and international tensions, because of conflicts and because of nineteenth-century returns to a power politics: it almost seems that we are in the presence of a kind of return to a vision of a power politics.” This was said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, at the meeting with the winners of the competition for Secretaries of Legation at the Quirinale. “This is an obvious contrast to the needs that the world is facing,” the head of state added, “from that of global health to that of climate change, which would require common and shared responses. On the other hand,” there are instead “war, aggression, the desire to impose one’s will on other states by force: it is truly a singular contradiction. “Against the international drift of violence and refusal of dialogue, with the attitude of cooperation and mutual understanding, our diplomacy has always been committed to the intention of finding shared solutions,” the head of state explained. “This task is carried out by our diplomats with great sagacity: it is a demonstration of high professionalism.
