WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – President Donald Trumpha signed an executive order to bar transgender people from taking part in women-only sporting events. A measure that represents a sea change in how the federal government enters into the rights of the category. “Under my administration, we will defend the proud tradition of women athletes and we will not allow men to beat, hurt and cheat our women and girls,” Trump said at a White House ceremony. “From now on, women’s sports will be for women only. Men who claimed to be women have stolen more than 3,500 victories.” In his remarks Trump also referred to Imane Khelif, an Algerian boxer who won the gold medal at the Olympics a year ago: “No one can forget that at the Paris Olympics last year it was a boxer who stole the victory from a woman. All that ends today because with this executive order the war on women’s sports is over.” Already at the beginning of his second term, Trump had issued a radical order to define sex only as male or female, so that this would also be reflected in official documents, such as passports. On the campaign trail, the mogul had expressed a desire to “keep men out of women’s sports.” The order was signed by the tycoon on National Women in Sports Day and focuses specifically on Title IX, a law known to ensure gender equity in athletics and the prevention of sexual harassment on campuses. In the briefing ahead of the ceremony, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt called this proceeding “a priority” for the current administration: “The executive order aims to rewrite the previous administration’s Title IX to value women who have suffered lifelong workplace injuries, who have been silenced and forced to shower with men on athletic fields across the country.”Last April, the Biden administration had determined that the rights of LGBTQ+ students would be protected under federal law, including providing new safeguards for victims of sexual assault on campuses. However, the previous administration’s policy had not gone so far as to make specific references to transgender athletes.(ITALPRESS).
