Meloni “On foibe and exodus defeated conspiracy of silence”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Remembering means ‘bringing back to the heart,’ that is, bringing back what we hold most dear to the center of us. We today ‘bring back to the heart’ hundreds of thousands of stories, and give them back the dignity they deserve. Today we honor the memory of the martyrs of the foibe and return to embrace all our fellow countrymen who decided to abandon everything in order not to give up their identity. Italians twice, by birth and by choice.” Thus Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance. “On this day, we bring back to the heart every single story of that tragedy and renew a solemn promise. We will continue to write new pages and tell the younger generations what happened to the people of Fiume, Istria and Dalmatia. Because their story is not a story that belongs to a portion of the border or to what remains of the communities of exiles, but is the heritage of the whole nation. It is a history that has defeated the conspiracy of silence and that no denialist or justificationist attempt will ever again be able to hide or erase,” Meloni concluded.
Earlier on social media Meloni had written, “On the Day of Remembrance we pay tribute to the victims of the foibe and to all those who suffered the tragedy of the Julian-Dalmatian exodus, a painful page of our history for too long forgotten. Remembering is a duty of truth and justice, to honor those who suffered and to transmit this memory to new generations. Italy does not forget.”
