Mattarella “Reflecting on dark pages of our past”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “We meet to renew the Day of Remembrance: a solemn occasion, which invites us to reflect on dark pages of our past, to preserve and renew the memory of the suffering of the Italians of Istria, Rijeka, Dalmatia, in a tragically tormented period of Europe’s history.” This was said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the celebration, at the Quirinale, of the Day of Remembrance. “In that area in the East, so peculiar, where, in alternating phases, Italian, Slavic, German and communities of many other origins had met, living together, violence took over, transforming it into a land of suffering. War always brings with it terrible consequences: mourning, pain, devastation,” he added. “Of that season, marked by a long theory of killings, arrests, torture, looting, disappearances, the foibe remain the bleakest symbol and no sleazy provocation can reduce its memory and harsh condemnation,” he stressed. For the head of state, “historical memory is an act of fundamental importance for the life of every state, every community. Every loss, every sacrifice, every injustice must be remembered. For too long ‘foibĂ  and ‘infoibarè were synonyms for the concealment of history. The memory of the victims must be preserved and honored.”
