RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – Morocco is preparing for a significant acceleration in renewable energy production in the coming years. According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), production from renewable sources in the country will grow by an average of 16 percent annually between 2025 and 2027, increasing their share in the electricity mix from 24 percent in 2024 to 35 percent in 2027. At the same time, coal-generated power is expected to decline by 2.5 percent annually, with its share dropping to about 50 percent in 2027 from 60 percent in 2024.The expansion of renewable energy will be driven mainly by solar photovoltaic power, which is expected to register an annual growth rate of 57 percent, and wind power, with an average annual growth rate of 15 percent. These developments are part of Morocco’s national strategy, which aims to increase installed renewable energy capacity to at least 52 percent by 2030.The Moroccan government is taking concrete steps to facilitate the integration of renewables into the electricity system. Three new electricity decrees, approved in 2024, are designed to incentivize bidirectional metering of energy withdrawn and fed into the grid, define conditions for issuing certificates of origin, and allow energy service companies to conduct studies and implement energy efficiency measures.A crucial element of the Moroccan energy transition is investment in grid flexibility and battery technology to ensure effective management of intermittent renewable sources. The growing adoption of seawater desalination is an energy challenge for Morocco, with a 3 percent increase in electricity consumption in 2024 set to continue. The construction of new desalination plants by 2027 will increase energy demand, requiring advanced solutions to integrate constant loads into a system based on variable renewable sources. Targeted investments and efficient grid management are essential to support this transition and consolidate the country’s position in the Mediterranean energy revolution.
