Ukraine, U.S.-Russia talks kick off in Riyadh

ROME (ITALPRESS) – The U.S.-Russian summit on Ukraine has begun at the Diriyah Palace, northwest of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Secretary of State Sergey Lavrov, who arrived in the capital Riyadh yesterday, attended the talks, which will last all day, without making any statements. The summit will also be attended by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Minister of State Musaed Al-Aiban.
“In Riyadh it is not a negotiation, there have been two phone calls and there is an informal meeting: the negotiation is not that, they are pourparler between the Americans and Russians, but there is no operational negotiation on the Ukrainian issue, because you cannot make a treaty without Ukrainians and Europeans, this is obvious, but that there are pourparler between the Americans and Russians was expected and inevitable,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on “Radio anch’io” on Rai Radio 1. “We have always said that the war would not have ended without the intervention of the United States and Russia, perhaps China would be needed as well, but this is natural and is in the order of things, because Ukraine’s military effort has been supported largely by America.”
“I am absolutely convinced that without Europe deciding whether or not to maintain sanctions on Russia, we cannot reach a peace agreement,” Tajani added.
