CETTIGNE (MONTENEGRO) (ITALPRESS) – “For three years now, Italy’s position, and in this context what I personally have always expressed to the numerous international interlocutors, has been sharp, limpid and very clear: the call for the re-establishment of international law and the sovereignty of every state, whatever its size. This firm indication has been the basis of the support that Italy with the European Union and the United States has given to Ukraine. A position accompanied by the hope that Russia will return to play its relevant role in the international context, respecting the sovereignty of each state, international law and the UN Charter.” President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella said this in Cettigne at a press conference after meeting with President Jakov Milatovic of Montenegro, responding to a question on Ukraine.
“When Ukraine, with Russia’s consent, became independent it had a large amount of nuclear weapons. At the urging of the United States and Russia, Ukraine handed over several thousand nuclear warheads,” Mattarella stressed. “Against this in the treaty Ukraine signed recorded the commitment of these countries to respect and guarantee its independence and territorial integrity. This is the world that we would like to see restored. The one in which commitments made and international law are respected.”
“We talked about the European balance, peace in Europe and in the world, and so we touched somewhat on this issue, with the hope that a just peace will be achieved and that it will not be fictitious, fragile, surmountable or shelved within a short period of time,” the head of state stressed.
