Stellantis, hands-free, eyes-closed autonomous driving with STLA Autodrive

AMSTERDAM (HOLLAND) (ITALPRESS) – Stellantis has unveiled STLA AutoDrive 1.0, the first autonomous driving system developed in-house that offers hands-free and eyes-closed functionality (SAE Level 3). STLA AutoDrive is an integral part of Stellantis’ technology strategy along with STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit and enables improved vehicle intelligence, automation and onboard experience. STLA AutoDrive enables autonomous driving at speeds up to 60 km/h by reducing the active role of the driver in stop-and-go traffic and providing valuable in-car time. Ideal for those driving in high-density urban areas, STLA AutoDrive will allow drivers to devote some of their time on board to activities other than driving, such as watching a movie, reading e-mail, browsing through a book, or simply looking at the scenery.
“For Stellantis, helping drivers make the best use of their time is extremely important,” said Ned Curic, chief engineering and technology officer at Stellantis. “By managing routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will improve the driving experience, making the in-vehicle experience more efficient and enjoyable.”
The system is designed to be simple: when traffic and environmental conditions around the car allow, the driver is alerted that STLA AutoDrive is ready to go into operation. Once activated via a button, the system takes control of the vehicle by maintaining safe distances, adjusting speed, and managing steering and braking seamlessly according to traffic flow. STLA AutoDrive continuously monitors its surroundings through an array of sensors to ensure precise and safe driving style and reliable operation even when driving in the dark or in difficult weather conditions, such as light rain. To maintain consistent performance, an automatic sensor cleaning system cleans critical components to ensure optimal reliability and functionality. Stellantis engineers have refined STLA AutoDrive to react quickly and naturally, ensuring that the system is smooth, reliable, and similar to a car driven by a human under normal conditions. Whether maintaining a safe distance or adjusting to heavier traffic, the system operates seamlessly to ensure safe and stress-free driving. At higher speeds, STLA AutoDrive offers the convenience of adaptive cruise control and lane keeping functions in Level 2 (hands on the wheel) and Level 2+ (hands-free, eyes on the road) modes.
Designed on a scalable architecture, STLA AutoDrive is ready for deployment and can be adapted on Stellantis’ brand cars in global markets, ensuring continuous deployment depending on business strategies and market demand. The system is also connected to the cloud, enabling continuous improvements through over-the-air updates and real-time data integration to optimize performance. STLA AutoDrive complies with current regulations in supported markets and requires the driver to remain seated, belted in, and ready to take control when required. In addition, the system complies with regional driver conduct laws, including restrictions on phone use. STLA AutoDrive is designed as an evolving platform, with ongoing developments and future upgrades potentially offering:
Hands-free and eyes-closed operation at higher speeds, up to 95 km/h. Enhanced off-road automation for some models. With its focus on safety, flexibility, and long-term adaptability, STLA AutoDrive represents another step by Stellantis toward smarter, more comfortable, and intuitive driving experiences.
