ROME (ITALPRESS) – “The Holy Father is not out of danger, he is suffering from bilateral pneumonia.” Professor Sergio Alfieri chief of General Surgery at the Policlinico Gemelli in Rome said this during a press conference to update on the condition of Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized at Policlinico Gemelli since Feb. 14 for bilateral pneumonia. “The Holy Father is not strapped to breathing machines. He is being treated for an infectious form. He is frail but has a strong heart. He will be in the hospital at least through next week. He maintains his good humor and told us to tell the truth. This morning he is in an armchair so he is not bedridden and when I came in I told him ‘good morning Holy Father and he said good morning holy son.” “For now the germs are in the respiratory tract and lungs. And we are dosing the therapies, keeping the cortisone very low so as not to lower the immune system,” Professor Sergio Alfieri continued. “The risk, though, is if any of these germs pass into the bloodstream. Any patient would have sepsis and it would be difficult to get out. But we knock on wood. We can tell you that we have reduced some medications, but it is still too early to say that Pope Francis is out of danger,” Alfieri concluded.
