GENOA (ITALPRESS) – Genoa nabbed a 1-1 draw against Empoli in the match at the Ferraris stadium worth the 27th day of the Serie A championship: the Tuscans’ initial lead through Alberto Grassi was answered by Vasquez in the 81st minute, thanks to an error by Silvestri. The visiting team immediately tried to make itself dangerous after 5′ with a free kick by Henderson, which, however, was bricked by Frendrup. In the 11th minute Vasquez risked losing the ball on Esposito’s pressure, but the Mexican managed to save himself by avoiding a potential threat. The first real chance at goal is built by Empoli in the 16′ with Gyasi, who by a matter of centimeters does not make the winning deflection on Pezzella’s cross. In the second part of the first half the game is very broken up and the two formations struggle to create dangerous chances, but at 36′ comes the turning point with the goal of the Azzurri’s advantage: a cross by Pezzella from the crossbar cleared by Leali favors Alberto Grassi’s decisive conclusion for the 1-0. Genoa tried to react, but at the end of the first half they went to rest on the 0-1 scoreline. In the second half, coach Patrick Vieira makes all five substitutions at his disposal to try to change the game, but the new entrants fail to make an impact.
At 60′, the Tuscans came close to doubling the score with Esposito, who broke free in the penalty area and kicked with his left foot, but a providential intervention by Vasquez saved the Rossoblù. The latter continue to push going in search of an equalizer, but Empoli on the counterattack always proves a threat: at 70′ comes a free kick by Cacace that ends just wide. After repeated efforts Vieira’s boys managed to nab the equalizer in the 81st minute with Vasquez finding the complicity of goalkeeper Silvestri. Despite the hosts’ final assault, the contest ended 1-1 at the end of 4′ of recovery time.
