Gaza reconstruction, Arab leaders agree on 20 billion Egyptian plan

GAZA (PALESTINE) (ITALPRESS) – A draft communiqué from the Arab summit adopted an Egyptian plan for Gaza’s future, calling on the international community and financial institutions to quickly provide support for the plan. According to Arab media reports, the initial phase of the plan calls for the construction of 200,000 housing units in Gaza over the next two years at a cost of about $20 billion. It also urges elections in all Palestinian areas within a year if conditions support such a move. Palestinian elections have been suspended for nearly 20 years.

Some details about it have already been revealed. “Al Arabiya” TV reported that the plan focuses on the two-state solution, opening the door to normal relations between the countries in the region and Israel. The plan also calls for Egypt and Jordan to train Palestinian police officers to maintain security in the Strip, which will then pave the way for the return of the Palestinian National Authority to administer Gaza. Also established is the establishment of a committee to manage the affairs of the sector in a 6-month transitional period by Palestinian decision, composed of independent technocrats under the auspices of the Palestinian government. Finally, the possibility of the Security Council studying the idea of an international presence in the Palestinian territories through peacekeeping forces is mentioned.

The plan also calls for addressing the issue of factional weapons through a clear horizon and a credible political process. It also provides for the preparation of temporary housing for residents of the destroyed sector and displaced people in 7 areas while working to conclude a medium-term truce for a specific period of time.
