Environment, agreement between Enac and GSE to decarbonize the airport sector

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Enac and the Energy Services Manager have signed an institutional collaboration agreement to accelerate the decarbonization process of civil aviation in Italy. The main objectives of the agreement are to improve the energy efficiency of airport infrastructures, promote the use of renewable sources in the sector and implement integrated policies that combine environmental sustainability with technological innovation, in line with European objectives in this area.

In fact, the agreement fits within the framework of the European policies for environmental sustainability and the Pniec, as well as the strategies envisaged by the Pnrr. The two institutions will work together to foster the sustainable development of the aviation sector through various initiatives including: energy upgrading of airport assets, the promotion of self-consumption configurations for sharing renewable energy between airport infrastructures. Also, the implementation of experimental projects for the use of biofuels and green hydrogen in air transport, as well as the launch of training and information initiatives on incentive mechanisms managed by the Gse that are compatible with the sector.

Enac President Pierluigi Di Palma, thanking Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin “for his participation in this meaningful discussion on sustainability, a global strategic priority,” emphasized how “we have taken up the challenge of reconciling air transport with the environment with a critical and non-ideological approach, which will enable us to achieve the EU decarbonization targets set for 2030 and 2050. Indeed, the aviation sector already represents a virtuous model of contamination for other segments of mobility characterized by a greater environmental impact. At the ground level, our country is ahead of sustainability goals: just think of the photovoltaic park recently inaugurated in Rome Fiumicino by Adr, the largest plant in Europe built in an airport. At the engine level, we will encourage the development of biofuels, which, compared to electric and hydrogen, are a compatible solution for current aircraft.”

Paolo Arrigoni, president of Gse, stressed that “the airport sector plays a strategic role in the country’s growth and must be at the center of a sustainable innovation path. With this collaboration, we want to accompany Italian airports in the adoption of cutting-edge energy solutions, promoting a development model that combines efficiency and respect for the environment.”
