Istat, January 2025 employment rate up to 62.8 percent and drop in unemployed and inactive

ROME (ITALPRESS) – In January 2025, compared with the previous month, growth in the employed is associated with a decrease in the unemployed and inactive. The increase in employment (+0.6%, or +145 thousand) covers men and women, employees and the self-employed, all age groups with the exception of 35-49 year olds among whom the number of employed decreases. The employment rate rises to 62.8 percent (+0.4 points). This was announced by Istat, noting that the decline in job seekers (-0.6 percent, or -9 thousand) affects men and all age groups, with the exception of 25-34 year olds for whom the number of unemployed grows; among women the value remains stable. The unemployment rate falls to 6.3 percent (-0.1 points), the youth rate to 18.7 percent (-0.3 points).

The decrease in the inactive (-1.2%, or -146 thousand) involves both genders, those under 35 and those aged 50 and older, while there is an increase among those aged 35-49. The inactivity rate drops to 32.9 percent (-0.4 points). Comparing the November 2024-January 2025 quarter with the previous quarter (August-October 2024), there is an increase of 85 thousand employed people (+0.4 percent). The growth in employment, observed in the quarterly comparison, is associated with an increase in job seekers (+1.4%, or +22 thousand) and a decrease in the inactive (-0.8%, or -99 thousand). In January 2025, the number of employed people exceeds that of January 2024 by 2.2% (+513 thousand units); the increase affects men, women, 25-34 year olds and those aged 50 and over, while a decrease is observed for 15-24 year olds and 35-49 year olds. The employment rate, in one year, rises by 1.0 percentage point.

Compared to January 2024, both the number of people looking for work (-10.7 percent, or -194 thousand) and the number of inactive 15-64 year olds (-1.3 percent, or -158 thousand) decreased. “In January 2025, the number of employed rose to 24 million 222 thousand,” Istat commented. The growth over the previous month involves permanent employees, which rise to 16 million 447 thousand, term employees (2 million 663 thousand) and the self-employed (5 million 111 thousand). Employment also increases compared to January 2024 (+513 thousand employed), but in this case it is a summary of growth in permanent employees (+702 thousand) and the self-employed (+41 thousand) and a decline in term employees (-230 thousand). On a monthly basis, the employment rate increases to 62.8 percent, while the unemployment rate, at 6.3 percent, and the inactivity rate, at 32.9 percent, decrease.”
