EU, Meloni “Rearmament unsuitable word, risks unclear messages”

BRUSSELS (BELGIUM) (ITALPRESS) – “I took the liberty of pointing out that the concept of defense in Europe is a tad broader concept than the word ‘rearm’, I think the word ‘rearm’ is not appropriate to talk about what we are doing. The concept of security and defense today is about so many domains, the daily lives of citizens and not simply about being equipped with weapons which is certainly a theme, but there is the theme of raw materials, cybersecurity, infrastructure. Maybe we are giving messages that for citizens are not very clear and we need to clarify what we are doing.” Thus Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the end of the extraordinary European Council meeting on defense in Brussels.

“In von der Leyen’s proposals, we welcomed a proposal that Italy had been making for some time, which is to decouple defense spending from the calculation of the deficit-to-GDP ratio. von der Leyen identifies additional possibilities to access debt for 150 billion on loan, additional possibility though among the additional critical issues that Italy has pointed out whereby most of these resources have to do with debt,” Meloni stressed.

As for the possible sending of European troops to Ukraine, “I am very perplexed about this proposal, I do not consider it particularly effective and I also consider it very complex,” Meloni said. “I think that the central issue of peace in Ukraine on which we must make all possible efforts to facilitate a peace process, I welcome the American initiative, but a just peace needs certain guarantees, which in my opinion are always within the framework of the Atlantic Alliance. That is the only serious way to do it, but sending unidentified European troops is perhaps the most complex and the least effective. I also ruled out the possibility that Italian soldiers could be sent in this framework, I think we have to think about more lasting solutions. Other issue is peacekeeping missions but that’s a whole other subject.”
