Migrant shipwreck, search operations underway for missing off Lampedusa

LAMPEDUSA (AGRIGENTO) (ITALPRESS) – Search operations coordinated by the Palermo Coast Guard off the coast of Lampedusa are underway, initiated following yesterday’s report of an inflatable boat with migrants on board in a precarious state of buoyancy. The patrol boats, which intervened yesterday, recovered and subsequently landed 10 survivors and six lifeless bodies in the port of Lampedusa.

Today, due to particularly adverse weather and sea conditions, search operations for any missing persons are continuing with the support of several air assets, including the Coast Guard’s MANTA aircraft and aircraft from Frontex, armed forces and police, which will take turns in overflying the area. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centers of Malta and Tunisia have also been alerted for searches in their respective SAR areas of responsibility.
