ROME (ITALPRESS) – “I want to be optimistic, every step that is taken at the diplomatic level is in the right direction. I believe that slowly it will be possible to arrive at peace, I believe that by the end of spring or at most in the summer, by now it is no longer convenient for anyone to continue fighting.” So said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, interviewed by Francesco Giorgino on XXI Secolo on Rai1. “We support all initiatives that can lead to peace because this war hurts everyone. I would say that the air is quite positive,” he added, “then let’s see how Putin will react to the American proposals, then there will have to be a real negotiation around a table, Russia, the U.S., Ukraine and the EU will have to sit down. The EU is important because it is imposing sanctions on Russia.”
“U.S. and EU must work together, we are two sides of the same coin, we cannot afford any division otherwise autocracies will gain. The West is not only a political alliance but also a value system, there is much to defend in the relationship with the U.S.,” he added. “The president of the Council will reiterate the strong relationship with the U.S., the support for Ukraine and the U.S.-EU relationship that needs to be consolidated. We are convinced that the EU and the U.S. must meet,” he explained.
“We are a stable government, we are the most stable government in the EU, It will last until the end of the legislature and I hope even after that. We are demonstrating for the first time that there is a coalition in Italy that can deal with problems and does so by being able to afford to look to the future. We are giving the EU an important signal of our role,” he stressed regarding the tightness of the majority.
Getting Trump to change his mind on tariffs “will not be easy but we need to discuss, talk and make everyone understand that a tariff war is not good for anyone. Overpriced products in America risk raising inflation. I want to be optimistic, I always look at the glass half-full, we have a government strategy to explore new markets,” he reiterated on duties, “With the U.S. we have an advantage because it is easier for Made in Italy to maintain a market, for now we are only talking about steel and aluminum and we will see what happens. Europe will play its part,” he concluded.
