Magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Myanmar, 1,000 confirmed dead and 2,400 injured

ROME (ITALPRESS) – The death toll from the 7.7-magnitude Myanmar earthquake is worsening. According to the toll released by military authorities, at least 1,002 people have died, while 2,376 others have been injured.

Therefore, the alarm raised by the U.S. seismic survey agency U.S. Geological Survey that the death toll from this dramatic earthquake was in the “thousands” proved to be well-founded.

At 7:20 a.m. Italian time on Friday, March 28, a first tremor of magnitude 7.7 was recorded, followed at 7:32 a.m. by a second tremor of magnitude 5.5, Ingv reported on X. The tremors were also felt in Thailand and China’s Yunnan province.

It is difficult at the moment to draw a final tally, given the number of buildings that have collapsed. The head of the country’s junta, Min Aung Hlaing, said Friday that he expects the death toll to rise and called on “any country, any organization” to help in relief efforts.

IL CORDOGLIO DI MATTARELLA

“Faced with the shocking images coming from the countries of Southeast Asia devastated by the earthquake, feelings of deep sorrow for the very numerous victims and solidarity for those who are fighting for their lives in these hours prevail. The Italian Republic hopes that the influx of emergency aid can be facilitated with every possible tool to support the rescue teams and the needs of the people affected by the earthquake.” Thus in a note the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
