Pichetto Fratin “Focus on biofuels for shipping, emissions reduction needed”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Maritime transport is certainly an important and growing source of greenhouse gas emissions – we are talking about 3-4 percent of CO2 emissions, 124 million tons emitted – so the need for emission reduction is very stringent: we have to make this great effort of reconversion and go for action starting with biofuels.” This was said by the Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, at the presentation of the maritime transport decarbonization study carried out by Eni, Fincantieri and Rina, with support from Bain & Company. “Biofuels, biogas, all liquid and gaseous fuels of non-biological origin as well, those derived from carbon are many processes that go together to get then to hydrogen, a front that is developing very strongly and on which we have great confidence,” the minister explained.

“I visited Newcleo, we are following it and I know it well because I have been following it from the beginning: the assessment to be made is how to accompany Newcleo as it grows. It’s still in the research and testing phase, not in production, so it’s a matter of figuring out how to accompany it in the next few years toward the goal of fourth-generation nuclear power,” so instead the minister responded to a question about a possible state investment in the company. “At the moment we have talked about it, in the sense of making an evaluation: newcleo will probably make capital increases or look for other solutions, clearly the interlocution is continuous and we will evaluate what our action will be,” he added.
